FRESH Open Round

The FRESH Open Round serves students who applied in Round 1 as well as new applicants. The opportunities available in Open Round consist of those externships that were not assigned in Round 1 as well as a small number of new listings. During Open Round, students are assigned an externship based on a first-come, first-served basis.

Procedure for Open Round

Students who wish to participate in Open Round must come to 203 Barnes Hall on February 13, 2009, between 5:00—7:00 pm, to sign up for an externship. Students should search the listings prior to Open Round and bring with them a list of externships which interest them and for which they are eligible (that is, they meet any requirements specified in the description).

The following steps need to be completed, by the deadlines stated, before coming to Open Round on February 13.

Application Process

Proceed as follows, depending on your status as either a current (completed an application in Round 1) or new applicant. All students who are placed in an externship during the Open Round are required to write essays that serve as an introduction to the sponsor (see All Placed Students).

CURRENT APPLICANTS
  • Unmatched in Round 1: See Nancy Law or Amy Layton in the FRESH office in 203 Barnes Hall before February 13 to discuss your options. Unmatched applicants will have priority for open externships until February 13.
  • Matched in Round 1: If you wish to sign up for a second externship, come to 203 Barnes Hall during Open Round.
NEW APPLICANTS

Prior to February 13, 12:00 pm, new applicants are required to:

  • Listen to the entire recording (65 minutes) of the 2009 FRESH Information Session, accessed through the audiolink on the Cornell Career Services website (Windows Media Player is required); this talk details program guidelines, procedures, and expectations.
  • Take a short quiz (10—15 minutes) on the content of the FRESH Information Session. The FRESH office is located in 203 Barnes Hall and is open from 8:30 am—3:30 pm.
  • Read the Application Instructions. This document lists the essay questions that will be required of students who are placed in an externship.
  • Take the Cornell CareerNet (CCNet) online tutorial (35 minutes). Upon completion of the tutorial, students are made CCNet eligible and can publish a resume to the FRESH resume book.
  • Complete the following parts of the FRESH application process:
    • Part 1. Create a one-page resume and name it using the format NetID_FR09_Open.doc.
    • Part 2. Update your Cornell CareerNet career profile; upload a resume to the Documents section of your CCNet account; and, publish your resume to the FRESH Open Round resume book.
    • Part 3. Complete sections A—F of the online application (contact and academic information and the FRESH Participation Agreement).
    • (Optional). Students may begin the essay portion of the application before February 13 but are not required to do so.
ALL PLACED STUDENTS

Prior to February 16, 8:00 am, all students who are placed in an externship are required to write Introduction Essays (see sample essays) and enter them in Part 3 of the online application. Students can make changes to essays up until the deadline.

  • Previous participants recommend writing essays in a Word document and then copying into the application.
  • Proofread your essays on the “preview” page.
  • Press the “Complete” button to submit the application.
