FRESH Program Guidelines to Consider

  1. Expenses: Students are responsible for all expenses related to the externship, including airfare/other travel, taxis, hotel, meals, etc. Before applying, evaluate the cost of travel, accommodation, etc. against the length of the externship and the potential benefits you could gain during that time.
  2. Application: You must complete all 3 steps (including the CCNet tutorial) associated with the application process online by the given deadlines in order to be considered for placement. You may continually make changes to choices, essays, and information up until the deadline. To be eligible for Round 1 FRESH externships you must:
    • attend one of the General Information Meetings in Appel Commons on either January 21 or January 23, 2009 (6:00—7:30 pm), or contact the FRESH Extern Office for your options.
    • complete the 3 Step Application Process online by 7:00 pm on January 30, 2009.
  3. At the Information Meeting, you will draw a lottery number to assist us in the placement process. Lottery numbers are valued from lowest to highest. If you have a class or work conflict and cannot attend either of the meetings, contact the FRESH Extern office for your options. Beginning Monday, January 26, 2009, students will draw from a higher group of lottery numbers.
  4. Length: Length of externships range from a phone or lunch informational interview to 1 to 2 days only, unless otherwise specified by the sponsor in the listing. Make sure to check the length specified prior to applying for the externship. Students cannot request to lengthen, shorten, or change the dates of the externship.
  5. Availability: Discuss your spring break plans with your family IN ADVANCE. If you are placed in an externship, you are expected to accept the externship and to complete the stated length of the externship. You must be able to commit to the date(s) indicated, which are determined by the sponsor (You need at least 3—4 business days available in order to fit into a sponsor's schedule). If you withdraw after being placed, you forfeit eligibility for future externships.
  6. Placements: You may apply for up to four externships and may be placed in only one during the matching process. In addition, applicants have the "fifth choice" option which gives us permission to suggest and match a student with an externship that meets his/her stated geographic and career field parameters. Students who apply and do not receive an externship may reapply in the open placement period and will be given preference for placement.
  7. Responsibilities: Students have complete responsibility for contacting the sponsor by February 27 and for making arrangements for the externship in a timely manner once placements are assigned. If you are placed in an externship, you are expected to acknowledge and accept the externship placement online, attend the required orientation session (either January 21 or 23), and to complete the stated length of the externship. You must be able to commit to the time indicated, which is pre-determined by the sponsor, and should not expect that the sponsor can lengthen or shorten their commitment. Do not apply for externships in which you do not have genuine interest or which you will not be able to complete due to expense, personal commitments, other travel, etc.
  8. Students are required to accept the online Participation/Hold Harmless Agreement which includes these important issues:
    • Cancellation Policy: Students who cancel externships without legitimate, extraordinary circumstances and/or adequate notice to the sponsor, or without notifying the Extern Office (203 Barnes Hall, 255-6399), will not be allowed to participate in the winter break Extern Program or other programs involving alumni in subsequent years. The FRESH office reserves the right to make judgements in such cases.
    • Insurance Coverage: Cornell does not provide liability insurance for me as a participant in the Cornell Extern Program. All externs will be required to agree to a release form.
    • Hold Harmless Form: All externs will be required to agree to this release statement: In exchange for my participation in the externship program, I, the undersigned, agree on behalf of myself, my assigns, executors, and heirs, to release, indemnify, and hold harmless Cornell University, its trustees, officers, agents and employees for any and all liability, damage, claim of any nature whatsoever arising out of or in any way related to my participation in the externship program, including any act or omission of any third party (Rescue Squad, Hospital, etc.), other than those arising out of the sole negligence of Cornell University.
