FRESH student comments

The FRESH extern program is a perfect length of time to just get a glance at something real in a career we are considering.

I didn't think I would find out that much in just one day. I?m really glad I did the externship and I look forward to doing another one.

It showed me that there are so many aspects to a business and a person could major in just about anything and get a decent job.

I cannot stress how great FRESH was. My sponsor was incredibly helpful, offering invaluable advice. He even encouraged me to contact him in the future for whatever questions or concerns I may have involving not only med school but these four years and anything else.

By doing this externship I now see that it is possible to find a job you really love and can still make a difference in the world.

A staff meeting provided an opportunity to ask how each person had gone from college to their present positions. It was really interesting to hear all the different tracks people had taken.

I realized that there is no "set formula" to any career.

The program was the first time I had been exposed to a work environment related to my major. It was informative to see what possibilities exist for me after college.

I really appreciate that we have this opportunity to get a taste for the career we hope to get into.

I wanted to get a feel of what stock brokering and all those big money making jobs were really about, and I have a clearer picture now. As for my career decision, it is still subject to more exploration.

Prior to the externship, I had my own ideas of what daily activities were in the field of law; this day clarified the role of the lawyer. Being in an actual legal environment helped confirm my desire to pursue a legal career.

I wanted to see if I liked the idea of going into a policy-oriented field. I found out that the majority of policy is in Washington, but I did get a better idea of how a company works.

My goal was to understand medicine in greater depth. By observing the larger scale clinic and a clinical trials unit, I understood a different side of patient care and medical research.

I was able to see the options open to me and also what is needed to start your own business. I did achieve my goal of learning alternative career routes with a physics or engineering degree.

I had lunch with my sponsor, and that discussion helped me realize that while college is important, what you major in is not your life's work; which is good to hear during pre-lim season.

The highlight of the externship was "playing surgeon" for the day. I was in the operating room for two major surgeries. So fascinating. Nobody gets a chance to observe these procedures up close and personal! My sponsor?s research on cadaver legs was so interesting and cool! Not gross at all!
