A day in your life can change the life of a Cornell student

Would you like to help students think through their academic and career options?

YOU can give students an insider's view of a career field by providing an opportunity for them to visit you at your workplace.

Without a big investment of time, you can help students by connecting for even a 1 day externship.

What is shadowing or an externship?
An opportunity for students to observe your day-to-day activities, discuss your job and field with you and your colleagues, and provide assistance with projects or tasks. Students make their own housing and travel arrangements and do not receive academic credit or pay.

What activities will be most helpful to the students during their visit?
Plan to provide the student with discussion and information about your career field, your organization and its operations. The student could attend appointments and meetings, if appropriate, and meet with other members of your organization. Other activities could include a tour of the organization, a meeting or lunch with other Cornellians, and discussion on how you made your career decisions, or changed directions during your career.

Length? Date(s)?
Students will visit for 1-2 days during spring break (the number of days is determined by your preferences on your sponsor form). You and the student choose a mutually convenient day/dates, or you can indicate the limited date(s) you would be available on the sponsor description form.

FRESH Program: March 15-22, 2003. One to two day visits only, as time and travel are limited during spring break. Freshmen from all colleges are eligible.  FRESH sponsor forms will be mailed in the fall to interested sponsors.

How are students chosen?
You specify your preferences and Cornell will select your extern. You will be contacted only by the student who is placed with you. Students from all colleges are eligible, but sponsors can list requirements or preferences of college/major or interests based on your field/organization or project.

How do I sign up? What is the timeline?
1. Return the Sponsor Registration Form by January 11th
2. You will receive notice in late February with the information on your selected student(s)
3. The student(s) will contact you in late February-early March to finalize date(s) and logistics
