Diversity

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) as of 2003 uses the following definition:

"Underrepresented in medicine (URM) means those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population."

A medical school can determine which groups in its geographic areas of interest are URMs.  This can help it address challenges to improve health care access for all and eliminate disparities in health by educating a diverse work force.
