Job-Shadowing Programs

Cornell Career Services sponsors a variety of programs that provide alumni an opportunity to offer hands-on experience to current students interested in exploring the alum's career field.

Cornell Extern Program

Introduce a sophomore, junior, or senior to the world of work and provide guidance on course work, activities, etc., that will better prepare the student for a career in your industry. The extern (job-shadowing) visit would take place during Winter Break, January 2—17, 2009.

The majority of visits last one to five days, but can extend longer at the sponsor's request. If your work setting is not conducive to visits from students or if you are retired or between jobs, we encourage you to offer an informational interview in the form of a lunch/dinner meeting or phone interview.

Register online or download the pdf and fax the registration form by September 10, 2008, for your externship to be included in the Round 1 application period. Registrations will continue to be accepted after September 10, however, benefits of early registration include additional publicity in the Cornell Daily Sun and multiple student application rounds to maximize placement opportunities.

Cornell FRESH Program

Host a freshman at your workplace for one to two days during Spring Break, March 14—21, 2009, to give an "insider's view" of a career field. The majority of visits last one to two days, but can extend longer at the sponsor's request.

Registration begins in December 2008. If you would like us to contact you in December concerning the March 2009 program, please send an email to NFL1@cornell.edu with your name, contact information, and career field or complete the Extern sponsor registration (see above) and indicate that you are available for the March 2009 program only.

Cornell Days

Host a group of students at your workplace during school breaks. For more information, contact Demetra Dentes '70, dd21@cornell.edu.

ILR WISP Program

The ILR Winter Intersession Program is designed to expose ILR students to a wide variety of careers available in ILR-related fields. Students spend a portion of their winter break volunteering their services on a project designed by the sponsoring employer.

ILR FEX Program

The ILR Freshman Extern Program provides ILR alumni and others interested in interacting with current ILR students an opportunity to sponsor a first-year student for a day of observation during winter break.
