Career Fairs and Events
CNY Communications Consortium
Tips and Guidelines for Success
- Dress is business attire for the interviews: suits or dresses, or skirt/slacks and sweater
or blazer are acceptable.
- Dress is business casual for the Information Fair: khaki pants and sport coat, or skirt/slacks and sweater
or blazer are acceptable.
- The CCS no-show policy is in effect. You could damage your own reputation as well as Cornell's by failing
to attend an interview.
- Be prepared! Research the employer and be familiar with the job description. You should review employer websites
thoroughly. Know specifics such as organizational structure, major accounts, recent
developments
(see press releases section on website),
etc. Use some of this information in your cover letter to emphasize
how your skills and interests match those of the job and the organization,
and be prepared to discuss particular issues during the interview.
- You won't be offered a job or second round interview on the spot! This is a preliminary interview process, sometimes called a "prospecting event," because employers are looking for potential
hires as the need arises. In the Communications industry, employers hire
on as-needed basis, for example
when a new client is secured or product is introduced. Therefore, some students
who attend this event may receive a call several months
from the time they meet the employer.
- Send a thank you letter to the recruiter within a week of the interview. This provides you the opportunity
to emphasize your interest in the organization and job, to highlight specific
skills and abilities that match the employer's needs, and to thank the employer
for his or her time. Be sure to ask for the recruiter's business card. We can
help you with
your job-search correspondence.
- View additional interview and job-search information that CCS provides, or pick up a free copy of our Career Guide, available in all CCS offices.
