Search the Externship Listings
Search Tips
Since each of the externship opportunities is listed only under one career field,
you'll need to do some creative searching to identify interesting externships
that may relate to more than a single career field. Review these search guidelines:
Use key words.
There may not be a separate career field for the type of career you would like
to explore. For example, there is not a career field called Environment, but there
are numerous externships relating to environment listed under Law, Consulting,
Education, Engineering, Management, Nonprofit, Government & Public Policy,
Research, etc. Search for key word "environment."
Pharmaceuticals is another good example. Depending on the sponsor's work, an
externship in pharmaceuticals could be listed under Research (Science and Technical);
Sales and Marketing; Manufacturing; or Management. By searching on the word "pharmaceuticals,"
you can find all the externships relating to pharmaceuticals from a variety of
career fields.
Other key words and phrases you could search by might include sports; hospital;
AIDS; housing; design; Seattle; Washington, DC; etc.
Use the wild-card search symbol (*).
If you are interested in careers related to the environment, you will find all
listings containing variations of the word environment by searching on environment*.
If you are interested in surgery, you can get surgery, surgeon, and surgical by
entering surg*.
Link two variables with the word "and" to narrow your search.
While many jobs require similar skills and responsibilities and may be of interest
to you, the career fields under which they are listed will vary greatly. For example,
the opportunity to visit a writer may be listed under Performing & Expressive
Arts, Publishing & Print Journalism, or Communications. You may miss out on
some great opportunities if you limit yourself to reviewing listings by career
field only.
For example, search for consulting and environment; law and bankruptcy. Think
of skills, interests, and responsibilities, as well as broad career fields.
Search for externships by college, major, or location.
This will help you identify externships that are particularly interesting to
you because of the sponsor's Cornell affiliation or if you do not have flexibility
about where you can complete an externship. For instance, if you are only able
to participate in an externship located in Rochester, searching by Rochester*
will locate all externships offered there.
