Factors to Consider
- Expenses: Students are responsible for all expenses related to the externship,
including airfare/other travel, taxis, hotel, meals, etc. Before applying, evaluate
the cost of travel, accommodation, etc. against the length of the externship and
the potential benefits you could gain during that time. Travel Grants may be available for externships within designated career fields (depending
on available funding).
- Availability: Externships for sophomores, juniors, and seniors take place during
January break. Externships are not available in December or at other times of
the year, unless specified by the sponsor in the listing. (The FRESH program,
externships for freshmen only, takes place during Spring Break.)
- Length: The length of externships is specified by the sponsor (generally one
day to one week) and cannot be changed. Students must be able to commit to the
length indicated and should not expect that the sponsor can lengthen or shorten
his/her commitment. Keep in mind that approximately 40% of externships are for
one day only. Some externships are offered as an informational interview during
a phone or lunch/dinner meeting, with sponsors who are unable to host on-site
visits due to confidentiality reasons.
- Application: You must complete all parts (including the CCNet tutorial) associated
with each step of the application process online by the given deadlines in order
to be considered for placement. You may continually make changes to choices, essays,
and information up until the deadline.
- Placements: You may apply for four externships per round but may be placed in
only one during each round. Students who do not receive a Round 1 externship may
reapply in subsequent rounds and will be given preference for placement.
- Responsibilities: Students have complete responsibility for contacting the sponsor
by December 5 and for making arrangements for the externship in a timely manner
once placements are assigned. If you are placed in an externship, you are expected
to acknowledge and accept the externship placement online, attend the required
orientation session (either November 18 or 20), and complete the stated length
of the externship (see #3 above for details). Do not apply for externships in
which you do not have genuine interest or which you will not be able to complete
due to expense, personal commitments, Greek Recruitment, other travel, etc.
- Students are required to accept the online Participation/Hold Harmless Agreement
which includes these important issues:
- Cancellation Policy: Students who cancel externships without legitimate, extraordinary
circumstances and/or adequate notice to the sponsor, or without notifying the
Extern Office (203 Barnes Hall, 255-6399), will not be allowed to participate
in the winter break Extern Program or other programs involving alumni in subsequent
years. The FRESH office reserves the right to make judgements in such cases.
- Insurance Coverage: Cornell does not provide liability insurance for me as a
participant in the Cornell Extern Program.
- Hold Harmless Form— All externs will be required to agree to this release statement: In exchange
for my participation in the externship program, I, the undersigned, agree on behalf
of myself, my assigns, executors, and heirs, to release, indemnify, and hold harmless
Cornell University, its trustees, officers, agents and employees for any and all
liability, damage, claim of any nature whatsoever arising out of or in any way
related to my participation in the externship program, including any act or omission
of any third party (Rescue Squad, Hospital, etc.), other than those arising out
of the sole negligence of Cornell University.
