Guidelines to Consider

  1. Expenses: Students are responsible for all expenses related to the externship, including airfare/other travel, taxis, hotel, meals, etc. Before applying, evaluate the cost of travel, accommodation, etc. against the length of the externship and the potential benefits you could gain during that time. Travel Grants may be available for externships within designated career fields (depending on available funding).
  2. Availability: Externships for sophomores, juniors and seniors take place during January. Externships are not available in December or at other times of the year unless specified by the sponsor in the listing. The FRESH program, externships for freshmen only takes place during Spring Break.
  3. Length: The length of externships is specified by the sponsor (generally one day to one week) and cannot be changed. Students must be able to commit to the length indicated and should not expect that the sponsor can lengthen or shorten their commitment. Keep in mind that approximately 40% of externships are for one day only. There are also roughly 5% of the externships that are offered as an informational interview as a phone or lunch/dinner meeting: the majority of these sponsors are at work sites that are unable to host on-site visits due to confidentiality reasons.
  4. Application: You must complete all 3 steps associated with the application process by the given deadlines in order to be considered for placement.
  5. Placements: You may apply for four externships per round but may be placed in only one during each round. Students who do not receive a Round 1 externship may reapply in sebsequent rounds and will be given preference for placement.
  6. Responsibilities: Students have complete responsibility for contacting the sponsor by November 30 and for making arrangements for the externship in a timely manner once placements are assigned. If you are placed in an externship, you are expected to complete required orientation and accept the externship and to complete the stated length of the externship (see #3 above for details). You must be able to commit to the time indicated, which is pre-determined by the sponsor, and should not expect that the sponsor can lengthen or shorten their commitment. Do not apply for externships in which you do not have genuine interest or which you will not be able to complete due to expense, personal commitments, Greek Recruitment, other travel, etc.
  7. Participation/Hold Harmless Agreement: This form which is attached to the Externship Application Instruction or online (see Forms Center) needs to be read, signed and turned in with the externship application in order to be considered for an externship. It covers the following key points; Insurance Coverage, Hold Harmless Agreement, and Cancellation Policy.
  • Insurance Coverage: I understand that Cornell does not provide liability insurance for me as a participant in the Cornell Extern Program and that I should discuss with my sponsor what insurance coverage the sponsor provides for me, if any. I understand that I participate in the Cornell Extern Program voluntarily and separate from Cornell University, and that the University is not responsible in the event I suffer personal injury, accident or personal loss or for claims against me resulting from my participation in the program or with the sponsor.
  • Hold Harmless Agreement: In exchange for my participation in the externship program, I, the undersigned, agree on behalf of myself, my assigns, executors, and heirs, to release, indemnify, and hold harmless Cornell University, it?s trustees, officers, agents and employees for any and all liability, damage, claim of any nature whatsoever arising out of or in any way related to my participation in the externship program, including any act or omission of any third party (Rescue Squad, Hospital, etc,?), other than those arising out of the sole negligence of Cornell University.
  • Cancellation Policy: Students who cancel or do not show up for their externships without good cause or adequate notice to the sponsor, or without notifying the Extern office (203 Barnes Hall, externprograms@cornell.edu, 5-6399), will not be allowed to apply in the other rounds or to participate in the Extern Program or other programs involving alumni in subsequent years. The Extern Office reserves the right to make judgments in such cases.
