Working Abroad

Securing a work permit is a challenge in planning to work abroad. Restrictions vary by country; check with the country's embassy in the U.S. for details on how to apply for a permit and how long it will take. One way to acquire a work permit is through a youth exchange program such as BUNAC (bunac.org) for work in England, Australia and New Zealand; and CIEE (ciee.org) for work in Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand.

Most programs require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency and there are restrictions for new graduates. These programs also provide assistance with housing, job searches, and low-cost travel insurance.

Books and bulletins in the Cornell Career Services Library in 103 Barnes Hall can help you in your international job search. The Key Employers is published annually in the periodical Transitions Abroad and provides a comprehensive list of short-term jobs by country. Other books include International Jobs Directory, How to Get a Job in Europe, Directory of Foreign Firms Operating in the United States, International Businesses in New York City, Going Global-Country Career Guides, Work Abroad and Volunteer Vacations. Job bulletins include International Career Employment and Current Jobs International.

At other locations on campus find international newspapers in Olin Library; information on international development in the CIIFAD Resource Center, B03 Mann Library; and information on multinational and international firms in the Johnson Business School Library, Sage Hall.
