Careers in Public Service
The Job Search
Job Search
Searching for jobs in the nonprofit and government sectors is very similar to
searching in the private sector. For example, most positions are not advertised
and personal referral is the most effective method. Use Effective Job Search and consider these points that are specific to public service:
- Almost any job in the private sector can also be found in the public sector—great
variety!
- We hold a large Nonprofit & Government Career Fair in early March of each year. You might also want to attend the ILR Social Justice Career Fair or the nonprofit fairs in Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
- There are more than 200 related resources in the 103 Barnes Hall Career Library on careers, employers, internships, and fellowships and can be located by key
word.
- Websites provide position postings and enable you to identify the organizations
and agencies of interest (those you can contact directly for positions that aren't
posted).
- You can identify specific city, county, and state government websites by searching
the 103 Barnes Hall Career Library database, using key words such as "government websites." Many jobs exist in
government.
- Generally, job vacancies are as likely to occur at one time of the year as another,
so your job search may not need to start until a few months prior to gradaution.
- Most public sector employers do not recruit on campus like many large firms do.
However, some government and nonprofit employers do participate in our on-campus
recruiting program.
