Letters of Inquiry

A letter of inquiry focuses on uncovering opportunities and getting your information on the databases of employers that may be of interest to you rather than addressing a specific position opening. An effective letter of inquiry paints a picture of someone with a strong, marketable skill set who will make a valuable employee. It does not need to repeat content in the resume, but should highlight key experiences and qualifications that may be attractive to a prospective employer.

Explore employment possibilities through an inquiry letter when you are interested in working at an organization, but don’t know if an opening exists.

  • Target the organization’s hiring needs by learning about tasks or positions for which you may be qualified.
  • Visit the website and/or call the organization to obtain information.
